Farm 03
What shall we make
with CO₂?
Read the Guide as Text
The green cylinders before you are filled with carbon dioxide.
Here they await their transformation into new materials and energy sources.
We often hear carbon dioxide discussed in terms of emissions and the environment, but here in the Farm Area, it serves as a raw material for production.
The vessel of biodegradable plastic standing just beyond the row of cylinders symbolizes this process.
Hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria produce the compounds that form this material and other new substances by consuming carbon dioxide.
Once it has fulfilled its purpose, the vessel will be broken down again by microorganisms to return to nature’s cycle.
The Japan Pavilion showcases this very process of decomposition.
Perhaps you’ll come across other vessels like this one somewhere along your journey.
